Coles Supermarkets is an Australian supermarket chain belonging to Westfarmers since 23rd November 2007, but was previously part of the Coles-Myers Group. With over 740 stores and a total of around 92,000 employees, Coles is the second largest retail company in Australia, after Woolworths.

High tech for "Down Under"

With the creation of two central national distribution centres for Coles, one of Australia's leading retail chains, SSI Schaefer was able to complete a challenging project.

SSI SCHAFER equipped both distribution centres with a fully automated small parts storage as well as the Schafer Carousel System. The eight storage and retrieval machines, one in each aisle of the automated small parts warehouse, are controlled by the SSI SCHAFER warehouse management system and provide quick storage and retrieval operations. Furthermore, four aisles for order picking are integrated in the automated small parts warehouse. The Schaefer Carousel System for automated order picking of slow to medium moving items forms the heart of the warehouses. With maximum storage capacity using a minimum of space, the SCS offers the fastest possible access to about half of the 8100 different products.
